Canada’s Immigrant Pathways for Tech Talents

Canada’s Immigrant Pathways for Tech Talents

Canada's technology sector is booming and industry growth is expected to continue outpacing the number of skilled technology workers in the Canadian workforce. This growth comes as start-ups and big players like Google and Amazon are investing more money and expanding their operations in Canada. This investment is a core part of the Canadian economy and as a result he has more than 250,000 skilled workers in Toronto alone.

In response to the high demand for skilled technicians, federal and state governments offer many permanent residence and work permit options for hiring foreign workers.

The most common route for qualified technicians to obtain permanent residency is through the Express Entry Application Management System or immigration programs that fall under the State Nominee Program (PNP). Express Entry is the Government of Canada's largest entry route for skilled immigrants. Tech talent may prefer to immigrate to Canada as permanent resident.

Express Entry:

Candidates with a technical background will most commonly receive an invitation for permanent residence under Express Entry.

Express Entry is designed to accelerate professional applications. The most common Express Entry option is the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP). This program, like most jobs in the technical sector, is intended for those with at least one year of professional experience falling under the National Job Code 0, A, or B.

Alternatively, a candidate who has completed her one-year work experience in Canada within the past three years may qualify for express admission through the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) program.

Provincial tech talent streams:

BC Tech Stream: This stream requires candidates to be eligible for one of BC's immigration programs and have a minimum of one year of tenure.

OINP Tech Draw: This Ontario immigrant candidate program requires candidates to qualify for either the Commonwealth Skilled Worker Program or the Canadian Experience Class.

Saskatchewan Tech Talent Pathway: Eligible candidates must have her employer-specific SINP (Saskatchewan Immigrant Candidates Program) Job Approval Letter for a qualified occupation in the tech sector. Must have at least 1 year of her professional experience in this profession within the last 5 years.

Alberta Accelerated Tech Pathway: Candidates must meet the Alberta Express Entry Stream eligibility criteria. Must be currently working in Alberta or have a job offer in one of 23 eligible occupations.

Quebec:

Quebec offers its own program called the Quebec Immigration Program for Workers in Artificial Intelligence, Information Technology, and Visual Effects Sectors.

Tech categories:

AI (Artificial Intelligence): There are two ways to qualify for this stream. If the candidate has graduated from a college or university in Quebec, work experience and recruitment are required. Recruitment may not be required if the candidate was educated abroad, but must prove an education equivalent to a Quebec bachelor's degree.

IT and Visual Effects Stream: Candidate must have two years of professional experience within the last five years in which she has one of ten qualified occupations. You must also have on-site job vacancies and the equivalent of a Quebec engineering degree or bachelor's degree.

Saskatchewan:

The Saskatchewan Tech Talent Pathway is his PNP stream for tech professionals who have received job openings in Saskatchewan's highly skilled technology and innovation sector. Applicants who pass this provincial nominee stream will be granted permanent residency in Canada.

The Saskatchewan Tech Talent Pathway is open to both Express Entry and non-Express Entry candidates. To apply to be an Express Entry candidate, applicants must have a valid profile in the Express Entry candidate pool. Applicants must have a job offer from an employer in Saskatchewan. This must be a full-time, full-time employee in one of the stream's eligible technical positions. See above for a full list of eligible occupations. Applicants must submit a valid SINP offer letter as part of their application.

If the candidate is applying from within Saskatchewan, the individual must be currently employed in Saskatchewan. Applicant has worked full-time for at least six months for the employer to which the job is posted or has at least one year of her professional experience within the last five years in the occupation for which the vacancy is advertised is needed. If applying from outside Saskatchewan, the candidate must have at least one year of relevant relevant work experience in the last five years in a qualifying profession.

The first requirement of the Saskatchewan Tech Talent Pathway is to secure a job offer from a Saskatchewan employer. Saskatchewan operates its own job site, Saskjobs.ca. After finding a job opportunity, a job seeker should obtain an offer letter from her SINP before applying. Once job seekers have secured a vacancy, they can submit an application for state nomination through SINP's online application portal.

Once a provincial endorsement applicant is accepted, the individual can apply to the federal government for permanent residency in Canada. While awaiting federal application processing, applicants may be eligible to receive a work permit support letter that allows them to obtain a work permit and work in Saskatchewan. The application process across the country varies depending on whether the applicant applied as an Express Entry or Non-Express Entry candidate. Express Entry candidates can add state endorsements to their profile and apply through our faster Express Entry system. Non-Express participants must apply through the regular process, which has a longer average processing time.
